Had Date # 2 with Suavecito tonight.
Jane's idea to think up boundaries before hand, so that I don't surprise myself with all of the sudden feeling out of control and scared and then.... quick run away, is a good idea. Tonight I decided my boundaries were: 1) Home by ten. 2) Walking around the town afterwards is fine, but nothing that requires getting in a car. At the end, of dinner he suggested we go on an "adventure...... or do you have to go home?" I said I had to go home. He seemed okay with that. And I was home by 10:15pm, so I basically stuck to my boundaries.
This date had a little less.... spark... than the first date. I think it's my fault. I think it's because I was a little weirded out by how easily I warmed up to him on the first date... so, on this date, I was purposely a little more reserved. It had less spark, but I still agreed to see him again on Saturday, and I still gave him a kiss goodnight. On Saturday I am going with him to some company BBQ/party. He was so considerate when he said, "Do you want me to pick you up? Or, if you're not comfortable with that, I can pick you up in a neutral location. Or if you'd feel more safe being the one to drive, we can do that too. How do you feel most comfortable?" I decided to let him pick me up on Saturday.
The date was a little... dull, I'd say - but if I had to name the best part, it was the part of the date when I finally felt like I wanted to let down my guard, deconstruct my wall, and reach out to him. He told me that I was different from the other girls he has dated. He said, You're..... smart. Not that all the other girls are dumb... but... well, kinda.... but you're not snobby smart... your'e really smart and outgoing and humble and funny.... so... so far... I like you." I'm not sure if I really meant this or not, but I said, "I like you too." Anyway, at that moment, when he said that, I felt like I could exhale, like I was safe with him, like I could reach across the table and grab his hand.
I am looking forward to Date 3 on Saturday. It'll be nice to have another Date with him... it'll help me tell if this is something that I should continue with. Tonight, after the date, I was talking with my friend/coworker/boss and she said that it took her about 7 dates to decide if she wanted to keep dating her boyfriend (and they are now promised to be engaged). That was good to hear.
Either way - Suavecito is a really genuine guy. Not overly annoyingly polite/complimentary... he's just a really real, kind person who also has a stellar sense of humor and clearly cares about his friends a lot.
A couple of interesting tid bits:
1. Today I told Suavecito that my coworkers have nicknamed him Suavecito. I then told him that I blogged (anonymously) about him and called him Suavecito. His response: "Do you think you could change the name to Machocito?" LOL.
2. Suavecito's parents are not very educated - they did not graduate from high school. Yet, Suavecito (the oldest child), graudated from an Ivy League school. His parents must just be so proud. I think it's so special when a family has a first person to go to college.
Other thing to share from the day: I got to work today, and my boss had taken it upon herself to schedule an hour into my calendar FOR EVERY DAY for lunch. I turned on my computer, pulled up my calendar, and it said, at 1pm, "Laura - Lunch - Do not disturb." Every day for the rest of the year has a lunch slot in it. My boss is so sweet.
Food was much better today There were three meals (oatmeal, salad, chocolate, sushi). I didn't feel deprived or hungry.
Mood was better today too. I felt self-believeing and connected with the world today. The distance, the withdrawn feeling I had before, the "alien fog that was latched onto my head" was all gone... and I felt like I was living at the edge of my face - for all the good and all the bad alike.

This boundary setting business is really useful - just getting to grips with it myself ;) But I think it's brilliant the way you kept to your boundaries on the date, and it's actually really useful for someone like me (who has never dated ever but wants to) to read for future reference, so thanks :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are doing good missy!
Sarah x
Healthy boundaries seem like good precautions for potentially tricky situations. It sounds like Suavecito really cares about you. Definitely seems very genuine, just like you said. Are you setting boundaries for Saturday as well?
ReplyDeleteYour boss is so freaking awesome. It makes me smile just knowing that those kinds of bosses exist!
Glad your starting to come out of the funk. And super glad they are taking such good care of you at work. Nice to see you back.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're feeling more connected with the world, and with yourself. Your boss sounds amazing. I think having someone at work looking out for you will really help you too.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to rush to any decisions with Suavecito. My current boyfriend and I spent a year being friends and then a couple months figuring out how we felt before we really started dating seriously. Now we've been together 5 years and he is absolutely the best thing that ever happened to me. So don't rush it or analyze what "it" is too much, just let it develop.
And on a sidenote, I loooove sushi. It's the one thing that will always get me to eat, even when I've been stubbornly avoiding everything else.
I love your boss! That's awesome :)
ReplyDeleteI wish you the best with your date on Saturday...and can't wait to hear about it.
Sarah/Mariposa: Thanks for the encouragement! You are a pretty awesome, gal. You know that?
ReplyDeleteAnbshilling: Thanks for commenting! I don't think the Jane mentioned in Ed Bites is the same as the Jane (my therapist) mentioned here... but maybe... who knows.... Again, thanks for the comment!
David: Yes, I am back. Thanks for recognizing that :)
J: THANK YOU for reminding me I don't have to rush any decisions with suavecito yet. If, for some reason, he wants to rush them... and he's not willing to wait for me to figure it out... then, too bad. I'm not going to feel rushed to make a decision. Thank you for that comment! Also, I think it's awesome the power sushi has on you :)
Amber: I love my boss too. Thanks for the good luck wishes. I'll let you know how it goes.
I like this post. It sounds safe [but not overtly safe].
ReplyDeletei love this post, suavecito sounds sweet trying to see where your most comfortable. i like the boundaries idea, x
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alex. Yes, he is safe... but now I'm starting to play that game with myself where I find things to be annoyed at about him (trying to find excuses to keep distance? trying to ensure nothing goes to fast?). this sounds weird, but sometimes I wish he was less polite.
ReplyDeleteLou Lou, thanks for the comment. Yeah, the boundaries idea is really helpful to me. I'm going on another date with him tonight. The boundaries are more tricky today... haven't quite figured them out yet... I'll post when I do.
I like that Suavecito is respectful of the boundaries you're setting and seems eager to do what makes you feel most comfortable. Some dates are just sparkier than others, especially if you've got a lot on your mind. Glad you're giving it another shot, can't wait to hear how tonight goes!
